Max’s story

When Max first walked through the doors of The Christie in September 2023 as a supported intern with Choice College, he was quiet, determined, and eager to learn. What followed has become one of our most inspiring success stories, a journey that shows just how powerfully a supportive environment, dedicated mentors, and hard work can change a young person’s life.

During his supported internship, Max spent time exploring the catering department, completing all 3 of his placements within the kitchen. It didn’t take long for the team to realise that Max wasn’t just participating, he was thriving. His enthusiasm, reliability, and natural talent quickly made him part of the team. The catering colleagues were unanimous: this journey shouldn’t end with his internship. Max had found his place.

As he grew in confidence, Max completed his food safety certificate and began preparing for a future in the hospitality and catering industry. When the catering team advertised a Chef Apprenticeship role, Max took the bold step to apply. With tailored support from our team, Max practised interview questions and techniques and took part in application support workshops.

He passed his interview with flying colours and officially joined The Christie as an apprentice chef in November 2024.

Since then, Max has flourished. He has gained in‑depth knowledge of nutrition, food safety, and the importance of preparing meals that are both appetising and suitable for patients receiving cancer treatment. He now has a thorough understanding of kitchen practices, procedures, and equipment, and he brings energy and positivity into every shift.

Max has also begun supporting new students on work experience, offering guidance and encouragement, a full‑circle moment that demonstrates how far he has come. He is now an integral part of the catering team, admired for his work ethic, kindness, and unwavering willingness to learn.

As Max approaches the end of his apprenticeship, he is on the cusp of earning his official chef status, a milestone he has worked incredibly hard to achieve.

We cannot express enough how proud we are of Max. His journey from intern to colleague stands as a shining example of what is possible when passion meets opportunity. It hasn’t always been easy, but he has faced every challenge with determination, resilience, and the biggest smile. Max is, and always will be, one of our most remarkable success stories.

Our first placement, Max, stands out as a true success story for The Christie; he has secured a position as our inaugural Chef Apprentice, and we are immensely proud of him as he begins his employment journey this week. We maintain a non-pressured approach; this is their opportunity to grasp lines of responsibility and take their first steps into adulthood. By empowering them to take ownership of their development and encouraging active engagement, we have found this method to be highly effective.
